These works began, as these things often do, with a fairly ordinary intention: to look back. A search through a family history - names aligned, dates confirmed, photographs held up to the light in the hope they might disclose more than they appear to – suggest a narrative, divine a truth, set the record straight. But the past, as it turns out, is rarely cooperative.
